secure disposal of backup tapes

Date November 25, 2005

Hi I wanted to get some ideas from everyone for secure disposal of
DDS/TRAVAN/DLT backup tapes.
How do you burn yours?

Kind Regards

  • Depending upon the local I would tend to think that destruction
by fire would be against local codes due to the materials involved.

Would not a strong magnetic source work instead?

  • Hi Murad,

At a prior job, once every few months, we had a bonfire at a staff
member’s residence. We kept the old/bad tapes in a locked cabinet until
the next bonfire. When the time for the bonfire arrived, two staff
members would ride together to the location of the bonfire, at which
time the tapes were thrown in. The staff members visually “confirmed”
    the destruction of the tapes.

Probably not the “best” way, but it worked for us!

  • Using a magnetic source is degaussing, which results in Data Remnance.
For “Secret” and “Top Secret” classification level Media Destruction
is required. Desgaussing will not work for these classification
    levels.

For “Confidential”, destruction is preferred, but degaussing is
    allowed. (I think).

  • On-site crusher, a lorry turns up with an inbuilt crusher/shreader, we
witness important stuff crushed/shreaded, then it goes and gets pulped
    or incinerated.

  • Hello,

I suggest you get a Tape/CD shredder such as this one:

    http://www.machine-solution.com/_Media_Destruction.html

If money is tight, you could also ask those 3rd party compagnies who
come onsite to shred paper. They probably have the equipment to shred
tapes as well. Iron Mountain might do it as they do secure storage of
tapes and onsite shredding as well.

  • You might want to have a look at this one too.:

    http://www.ibas.com/data-erasure

Its certified to handle anything from tapes to harddrives.
