History

In 2005, Carbonite, Inc. became the fifth joint venture between David Friend and Jeff Flowers, both well-known Boston-based serial entrepreneurs. Together, the pair co-founded four other companies: Computer Pictures Corporation, Pilot Software, FaxNet Corporation and Sonexis Incorporated. While their past companies were business-to-business, Carbonite Online Backup is their first consumer product.

The company started with a strong focus on photo backup and made their debut with Staples in 2006. It wasn’t long before Carbonite’s backup service was paired with Microsoft Money 2007 and also renewed for the 2008 release. Carbonite, Inc. expanded their online backup service in 2006 by offering unlimited backup space for one price. With unlimited backup space, customers can back up just about anything; emails, music, financial records and documents.

  • Partners with Packard Bell in 2008, the first partnership between an independent online backup company and major PC manufacturer, provides all purchasers of Packard Bell desktop and notepad computers in Europe a free four-month subscription to Carbonite
  • Partners with Lifeboat Distribution in 2008, to enhance distribution coverage within North America
  • Partners with Lenovo in 2008, one of the world’s largest makers of personal computers, where Online Backup Service will be pre-loaded on Lenovo PCs
  • Partners LaCie in 2008, a leading manufacturer of computer peripherals, to power LaCie’s online backup
